Auditive Heterotopias is intended for research on the connection between social phenomena and two of the “great obsessions” in science and art in recent decades: on one hand a spatial turn and on the other an acoustic turn, a “sonic boom”.

The research for Auditive Heterotopias analyses the field using an approach based on the concept of heterotopia, which has not been used in this field previously. The research thus opens up a new field of discourse in an expanding discipline of sonic and spatial arts and connects it with other disciplines such as social sciences, architecture, cultural studies, media theory, experimental media art and fine arts.

In this context, research brings to light social constructions, intersections of power and knowledge through sound, thus also enhancing a geography of power. Understanding these processes as ideological without neglecting the knowledge of sound and spatial analyses constitutes a step toward an inquiry into meanings of noise (and silence) in specific spatial contexts, for particular communities. In this sense, sound creates a relational social and spatial geography at the same time.

The theoretical framework of the project is based on the concept of heterotopia as introduced by the French Philosopher Michel Foucault (1926-1984). “De l’espace autres” (Of Other Spaces), a lecture held by Foucault in 1967, has had a certain impact mainly in the theoretical discourse of architecture, but has also spread into human geography, urban theory and cultural studies since then. The concept of heterotopia comes from a space that is different. Foucault borrowed the term from medicine, where it is used to denote organs or a growth in an abnormal, displaced position. In its original discipline, the term is used primarily to draw a line between two territories: healthy and sick.

Foucault describes heterotopias as real places in comparison to utopia and dystopia. Heterotopias can be understood as spaces of otherness, spaces of multiple layers, as a concept of something that is in between and/or outside dystopia and utopia. He explicates heterotopias with six principles, which are the point of departure for the project and briefly outlined here:

The first principle is that all societies constitute and use heterotopias. Although there is no universal form of heterotopias, they can be classed in two main categories: Crisis heterotopias and heterotopias of Deviation.

The second principle of heterotopias is that each heterotopia has a precise and determined function within a society, but any given society can change that function in the course of its history and in keeping with its needs.

The third principle is that a heterotopia is capable of juxtaposing multiple, even possibly incompatible sites in a single real space.

The fourth principle is that heterotopias are linked with time, what Foucault calls heterochronies.

The fifth principle is the system of opening and closing that heterotopias always presuppose, which both isolates them and makes them penetrable at the same time.

The sixth principle relates to the function of heterotopias in relation to all remaining space.

Although many examples of this can be cited, an analysis through the “heterotopic” lens and especially the ear has yet to be undertaken. The central aim of Auditive Heterotopias is to generate a broad perspective of sounds and spaces in the social world and to provide a framework for furthering artists’ practice. In its core the project wants to reflect, analyse, decompose and deconstruct sounds in Heterotopias. In critically developing a discipline called heterotopology, the primary interest centres around auditory modes relating to space and questions of power, mainly focussed in sounds in certain spaces, which are to be analysed through the lens and ears of Foucault’s concept of heterotopia.

As one axiom is to understand and analyse social differences and different forms of power because they are roughly incorporated across space, analysing space, place and sound through heterotopology means finding out where, how and for whom difference erupts and maintains itself. This is to be achieved combining scientific methods and approaches from artistic practice. By pursuing systematic descriptions and analyses (of space, sound and social relations), the project seeks to find poles of interest that go beyond Foucault’s thesis.

Stay tuned for more ….

Rudolf Weidenauer und Frank Jödicke : Correndo All´indietro Per Napoli” (Video, 64 min. 2007)
In dem Video”Correndo All´indietro Per Napoli” (Video, 64 min.

Karo Szmit : (Wandarbeit 2011)
Karo Szmits künstlerische Praxis umfasst Zeichnung, Video, Animationsfilm, Rauminstallation, Performance.

Gastauftritt: Cherry Sunkist
Mit ihrem aktuellen Album “Projection Screens” (comfortzone) generiert Cherry Sunkist aka Karin Fisslthaler eine sonische Wunderkammer zwischen radikal bearbeitete Noise-Gitarren, böse Drones, elektronische Stolperbeats, harschen Brüchen und faszinierend unheimlichen (Geister)Gesängen.

Bass- and drum-junkies of the worst kind have their dream come alive. Harsh, minimalist, brutal tracks to kill your stereo. Slowly but stubbornly modulating noise and kickdrums into big blocks of concrete (and I do mean the floor building stuff that is as hard as hell). Or using real clicks from analogue electric currents to build vast powerful machines. Mille Plateaux gone Punkrock is more like it. At several times he does build a monstrous groove, but you’d still kill any party with that record. I know you’re gonna enjoy it. I tried for a few month now to come to grips with this record, but I couldn’t do it. I was either too busy by my life or too distracted by the music to get to any final conclusion, so, finally, I have decided to take the easy way out: I’m gonna tell you all what this is, and you try to figure it out for yourself, ‘kay? The basics are that Egotrip, quite unsurprisingly, is a soloproject. The mind behind the sounds is Andre Zogholy, who has already released on Staalplat and shared stages with Dat Politics, Techno Animal, David Toop, Pan Sonic, Meldted Men, Console, and others. A mixture that is quie fitting for the music that Egotrip lays down. On “EGO = ego – 1″ you’ll find eleven minimalist tracks consisting of one basic soundpattern that is altered slightly during the course of a few minutes. These soundpatterns appear as if taken from the wrong end of the plugs, like electric current come alive. Definitely analogue origins, kickdrums born from interference. As if Zogholy was searching his machines and pedals for mistakes, for those constellations in which sounds turn into noise and then broadening that small band until it becomes a highway to drive on. At times the rhythms or rather loops form straight beats, then you get something like Jean Bach without the computers (but a similar sense of humour) or even like T.Raumschmiere without the melodies. For melodies are completely missing. Especially within those other pieces, that defy any straight beat, change stuff around to destroy the rhythm and then dissolve in a high-pitched tweeping. Some of it is subtle and drawn-back, but most tracks are brutally in your face, harsh and without any decoration. Like metamphetamine-junkies from the south searching for the lowest, broadest and most destroying bass sound there is. A V8-boombox. During the tracks Zogholy is moving modulations and frequencies up and down the scale, lets the beat run out or intensifies them, all as ruled by a magic hand. The god of electronic noise, what’s the animal to bring as sacrifice? To wave away Egotrip’s efforts by labelling them as simple would be wrong. Even the aforementioned “minimalist” is a broad description, but still fitting because of the restriction to two maximum three layers of sound. At times there is even only one. Going that way he moves from genre to genre, even scratching on hiphop here or avantgarde electronic there. (That’ll make him easy prey for the purists. Fuck the purists.) Do I have to mention that this should be listened to loud, as loud as possible without hurting anyone? It seems to me as if failure is as important to Egotrip as success. After all, the definition lies all with the people involved and if Egotrip manages to declare that what he is looking for is failure – the breaking of soundwaves, instant interference or overdrive, involuntary noises overtaking the whole loop – then success is not what he is looking for.
